Advocating for LGBT Rights in Chile
Andrés Rivera, IGLHRC senior advisor for Latin America and Director of Organización de Transexuals por la Dignidad de la Diversidad (OTD), and Jessica Stern, Executive Director of IGLHRC, advocated for the rights of lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people before the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). After a dynamic LGBT-inclusive dialogue between the Committee and the State, the advocates were invited for direct discussion with members of the Chilean government, including the head of the Women’s Ministry.
Rivera raised attention to issues documented in the shadow report, Violaciones de derechos humanos de las personas lesbianas, bisexuales y transexuales (LBT): Un informe sombra submitted for the session. Issues including Chile's less-than-perfect anti-discrimination bill, unjust arrests and detention, and harassment of LBT people, transgender women specifically, under the country’s morality law, the right of LBT people to be parents, and the lack of a gender identity bill in the State were discussed. The committee asked several LBT-related questions during the session and published concluding observations that specifically address sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination.
