Celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) human rights is no everyday occurrence at the United Nations. This event is the only high profile UN event specifically focused on LGBT human rights and, this year, features UN Leader, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The increasing inclusion of LGBT rights at the United Nations is due in no small part to the relentless efforts of LGBT human rights advocates globally. In 2012 the Human Rights Committee firmly articulated States’ responsibility to recognize and enforce rights of LGBT individuals; UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN High Commission for Human Rights Navi Pillay spoke out repeatedly in support LGBT people; and most recently, the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions with reference to sexual orientation and, for the first time, gender identity.
Note: A UN special event pass is needed to attend the event; RSVP required. Each year, attendance at the event increases; last year there was standing room only! Yes, people really do care about LGBT rights at the UN. Space is limited.
To ensure that you are on the list, please RSVP with your Name and Organizational Affiliation (if applicable) ASAP to email@example.com. We need all names by Monday, December 10th at 9 am. This is a hard and fast UN deadline.
Each year, the United Nations commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by holding events about the current state of human rights around the world and celebrating the accomplishments of human rights defenders. The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission and Human Rights Watch, in coordination with a coalition of State Members of the Nations, has organized this panel about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) human rights around the world.
