Each day, I hear stories about LGBT people around the world who face arrest, institutionalization, forced marriage, and denial of basic medical care. Some are brutally beaten, raped and even murdered.
Despite the repressive climate, LGBT people around the world are getting bolder. They are standing up and speaking out.
We must support their courage.
Because of your contributions, the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission IGLHRC has progressively increased the visibility and safety of LGBT people internationally. Yet, progress fuels opposition.
While we all watch the flames of homophobia in Uganda with horror, the same fires are burning in countries around the world.
Nowhere is this more evident than in Nigeria. The latest version of the confusingly named "Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill" declares that the “public show of same sex amorous relationship [sic] directly or indirectly is hereby prohibited.” Incredibly, it would punish LGBT affection and activism with 10 years in prison.
That’s why we are expanding our work to support these and other heroic activists, to continue our fight on the frontlines where our sisters and brothers are attacked and in the halls of the United Nations where we will hold governments accountable. I urge you to make your 2012 Year-End Leadership Contribution to IGLHRC right way. Thank you!
